About Dolls The event that led to the creation of the Teddy Bear occurred near Onward, Mississippi, in 1902, when President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt went bear hunting. The bear found for him was small and weak, and Teddy could not bring himself to harm it. News of his refusal to shoot the bear spread far and wide. Morris Michtom, a New York merchant, created a stuffed toy bear, labeled it "Teddy's Bear," and placed it in the window of his candy store. His success was so great that it led to the formation of the Ideal Toy Corporation in 1903. Teddy bear collectors are known as arctophiles from the Greek words 'arcto' (bear) and 'philos' (lover).
